Sophie S. O'Neil

Sophie S. O'Neil, 86, formerly of 29 Crossin Terrace, died yesterday morning at Providence Care Center in Lenox.

Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 12, 1917, daughter of Gustave and Stella Zaremba Borkowski, she was a graduate of Pittsfield High School.

A homemaker, she had worked at the former Paris Dress Shop for a short time.

Mrs. O'Neil was a communicant of St. Mark's Church, where she was a member of its Rosary Sodality and taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes.

She was a former president and treasurer of the Stearns School PTO, and a member of the Widows of World War I Veterans and the Ralph Froio Senior Center.

Her husband, Francis D. O'Neil, whom she married June 5, 1940, in Holy Family Church, died June 10, 1998.

She leaves a son, Pittsfield Police Capt. John T. O'Neil of Pittsfield; a daughter, Maureen M. Allessio of Pittsfield; a sister, Stella Carmon of Dalton; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Another son, Francis D. O'Neil, died July 12, 1998.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Sophie S. O'Neil, 86, died July 5, 2004. The funeral will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 at St. Mark's Church by the Rev. Anthony Cullen of St. Mary's Church in Lee. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph's Cemetery. The family will receive guests from 8 until the time of the service at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME.

In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home. She is lovingly survived by her grandchildren, Mike Allessio, Marc Allessio and his wife, Jill, and Kelly, Shaun and Ryan O'Neil; her great-grandchildren, Cheyenne and Tierra Allessio; her son-in-law, Charles Allessio, and her daughter-in-law, Hulda O'Neil.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Charles, Richard and William Borkowski, and her sister, Agnes Hoffer.
