Helen B. "Miss Mac" McNaughton

Helen B. "Miss Mac" McNaughton, 96, of 4550 Willow Bend Drive, Melbourne, Fla., formerly of Pittsfield, died yesterday morning at home.

Born in Pittsfield on April 12, 1908, daughter of John D. and Helen Dooley McNaughton, she was a 1926 graduate of St. Joseph's High School. She earned a bachelor's degree from Sargent College at Boston University and her master's degree from Columbia University.

She had resided on Highview Drive.

Miss McNaughton taught physical education at Pittsfield High School for 30 years, retiring in 1970. She also was chairman of women's physical education department, and organized the Pittsfield High Cadets marching unit and the Girls' Athletic Association. She first worked for seven years at the former Girls' Club, now Girls Inc., then at Seton Hall School in Baltimore.

She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of its Rosary Sodality. She was a member of the Berkshire County and Massachusetts retired teachers' associations, the Delta Kappa Gamma honor society and the Boston University Alumni Association.

She was the first woman recipient of the Rotary Club Service Above Self Award. While in Florida, she was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

She leaves several nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Helen B. "Miss Mac" McNaughton, age 96, who died June 30, 2004, will be Saturday at 8:15 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 9 at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor of St. Joseph's Church.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice and Palliative Care in care of the funeral home.

Among survivors are Ronald "Dunc" Schultz and Anne Hodges, both of Melbourne, Rosemary Schultz of Tamarac, Fla., Sister Margaret McNaughton, SSJ, of Springfield and Patricia McNamara of Dallas. She was predeceased by her brother, James "Dunc" McNaughton, and her sister, Rosemary M. Schultz. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Ascension Church in Melbourne at a later date.
