Leo R. McFarland, 81, formerly of Pittsfield, died June 23 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Worcester.
He had resided at a nursing home in Worcester for three years.
Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 19, 1922, son of Edgar C. and Alta L. Kirchner McFarland, he was a graduate of Pittsfield and Providence, R.I., schools. He also had resided in Waterford, N.Y.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 344th Engineering Regiment from July 1942 to December 1945.
Mr. McFarland had been employed as a laborer in the city of Pittsfield's sanitation department until 1964.
He founded the Leo McFarland Someone Cares Scholarship for most-improved students in Pittsfield and Waterford.
He leaves a sister, Cecelia Sparks of Indianapolis.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Leo R. McFarland, who died June 23, 2004, will be celebrated Saturday, July 3, at 9 at St. Mark's Church by the Rev. John C. Salatino, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leo McFarland Someone Cares Scholarship in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
He was predeceased by another sister, Louise Wibby Vogel.
