Edward D. Sullivan

Edward D. Sullivan, 85, of Hanover, N.H., formerly of Pittsfield, died Monday at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Born in Boston on May 3, 1919, son of John P. and Ellen T. Hayes Sullivan, he was educated in Winchester and graduated with high honors from Northeastern University in 1949. He also attended Howard Green CPA School.

He moved to Pittsfield in 1966.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he served as a chief petty officer in the Pacific theater from 1942 to 1945.

Mr. Sullivan joined A.H. Rice Co. in 1966 as controller and director of purchasing and retired as chief financial officer. He then helped his son, Theodore M. Sullivan, start a professional income tax preparation and planning company in Simi Valley, Calif.

From 1985 to 1990, he helped build CFS Tax Software Inc. into one of the nation's largest planning and utility software developers. He also had been treasurer of Boston Nickel Plating Co. and of the North Station Merchants Association in Boston.

He was a communicant of St. Denis' Church in Hanover. While in Pittsfield, he was a member of the Rotary Club, treasurer and secretary of the Country Club of Pittsfield and treasurer and vice president of the Red Cross chapter.

He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus 210 in Winchester and the Meadowbrook Country Club in Reading. In recent years, he was a member of the Ledges Golf Club in York, Maine. He was an avid bridge player and attained the master level.

His wife of 58 years, the former Helen D. Hynes, is deceased.

Besides his son, of Simi Valley, he leaves another son, Gregory D. Sullivan of Salem, N.H.; two daughters, Janet H. Sullivan of Orleans and Rebecca E. Fawcett of Hanover; two brothers, Francis T. Sullivan of Fairhaven and Robert T. Sullivan of Halifax, and 15 grandchildren. Another son, Kenneth H. Sullivan, is deceased.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Edward D. Sullivan, who died June 28, 2004, will be Friday, July 2, at 9:30 at COSTELLO FUNERAL HOME, 177 Washington St., Winchester, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Mary's Church, 155 Washington St. Visitation will be Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 only at the funeral home.

Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, 1 Medical Center, Lebanon, NH 03756. Beloved husband of 58 years of the late Helen D. Hynes. He also was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.
