Alan B. Stephens, 94, of Walker Street died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.
Born in Cranston, R.I., on July 7, 1909, son of Bradford and Annie Bower Stephens, he grew up in Needham and in Prudence Island, R.I. He attended English High School, Cushing Academy in Ashburnham and graduated from Burdett College, where he was class president and editor of the school newspaper.
He moved to Lenox in 2000.
Mr. Stephens was the owner and operator of Robert Burlen and Sons, a bookbinding company in Boston, for 43 years. He purchased the company in the 1950s after first working there. Prior to that, he worked for his father at Brad Stephens and Co. in Boston, which did printing, publishing and publicity.
He was past president of the Book Binders Guild and Society of Printers. He was involved in many community activities, including serving on the council of the Salvation Army in Boston, and was a member of the Boston Rotary for 29 years and the Marshfield Rotary for 15 years.
He also was active in Scouting.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially in Alaska and Canada.
He was a member of the Marshfield Golf Club for 50 years, a founder and past president of the Westwood Rod and Gun Club and past secretary of the Ponhook Fish and Game Club of Nova Scotia.
He and his wife, the former Geraldine Rice, were married Sept. 16, 1939.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Dr. Bradford A. Stephens of Lake Placid, N.Y., and Christopher A. Stephens of Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters, Jane Elms Stephens of Pittsfield and Holly R. Stephens of Palmer, Alaska; a brother, Bradford H. Stephens of Centerville; a sister, Shirley Pallacchini of Pensacola, Fla., 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Alan B. Stephens, who died June 27, 2004, will be today, June 30, at 2 at Church on the Hill in Lenox. Burial will be in Canton Corner Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee is in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his daughters-in-law, Anne and Donna Stephens; his sons-in-law, Kevin Murphy and Ken Thomas; grandchildren Jamie Murphy, Sue Malloy, Heather Murphy, Pat Smith, Sean Murphy, and Cameron, Sharon, Britton, Bradford D., Emily, Benjamin and Morgan Stephens; great-grandchildren Kelsey and Sarah Metts-Murphy, Cole and Casey Stephens and Emma Murphy Malloy, and his brother-in-law, Mario Pallacchini, and several nieces and nephews.
