Bernard J. Hayes, 66, of 73 Holmes Road died Wednesday evening at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on June 20, 1938, son of William and Eliza-beth Kirk Hayes, he was a 1956 graduate of St. Joseph's High School and a 1960 graduate of Siena College. He also attended St. Bonaventure College, Northwestern University and Lowell University.
Mr. Hayes was employed as a civil engineer with the state of Massachusetts for more than 40 years, retiring in 1998 as assistant district highway engineer. In 1987 he received the Pride in Performance Award from the state.
A communicant of Sacred Heart Church, he was a Confraternity of Christian Doctrine teacher for 25 years, a Eucharistic minister and the recipient of the Pope Pius X Award in 1987.
He enjoyed swimming, golfing, gardening, photography and carpentry.
He and his wife, the former Mary Donovan, were married Sept. 21, 1963, in Sacred Heart Church in Wethersfield, Conn.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Peter Hayes of Baltimore and John Hayes of Pittsfield; four daughters, Marybeth Koontz of Portland, Maine, Bridget Pope and Ellen Hayes, both of Pittsfield, and Catherine Hayes Stechmann of Quincy; three brothers, Charles Hayes of Atlanta, Patrick Hayes of Dennisport and Kevin Hayes of Hanover; four sisters, Liz Joubert and Theresa Doyle, both of Rockland, Margaret Campbell of Braintree and Helen Hayes of Pittsfield, and four grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Bernie Hayes, age 66, died June 23, 2004. Calling hours will be today, Friday, from 4 to 7 at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. The funeral will be Saturday at 9:30 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church, celebrated by the Rev. John Shaeffer.
Entombment will follow in St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Church in care of the funeral home. He is lovingly survived by his grandchildren, Cameron Pope, Makayla Pope, Hannah Hayes Stechmann and Mitchell Stechmann; his uncle, the Rev. Charles Hayes OFM; his aunt, Elizabeth Teatreault, and many nieces and nephews.
