An avid fisherman, he enjoyed telling fish stories, reading, tracking the weather, tending his flower and vegetable gardens, and tinkering.

He was a member of the Dalton Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and spent many summer on Cape Cod with the Cranes.

His wife, the former Geraldine Flynn, whom he married Aug. 15, 1936, in Nassau, N.Y., died Sept. 10, 1993. They had renewed their vows in 1942 in St. Agnes' Church.

He leaves three sons, John C. Thomson Jr. of Daingerfield, Texas, Peter Thomson of Ulm, Germany, and Kevin G. Thomson Sr. of Pittsfield; four daughters, Patricia Cataldo and Sandra Thomson, both of Pittsfield, Rita Sullivan of Plymouth and Charlene Summers of Faucet, Mo.; a brother, Charles Thomson of Housatonic; three sisters, Dorothea Kirchner of Lenox, Alice Sabato of Springfield and Geraldine Fallon of Hinsdale; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
