Dick LeRoy Boyce

Dick LeRoy Boyce, 81, of 935 Dublin Road died Wednesday at home after a long illness.

He was a member of the Richmond Conservation Commission for 30 years.

Mr. Boyce was employed by the Berkshire County Extension Service from 1955 to 1989 as a horticultural specialist. He had written numerous newspaper and magazine articles, including for The Berkshire Eagle, Better Homes and Gardens and New England Homestead. He also had appeared on television and local radio stations, and had given lectures and demonstrations.

Born in Binghamton, N.Y., on Dec. 5, 1922, son of Nathan and Lilla Hubbard Boyce, he was a graduate of Binghamton North High School. In 1950, he earned a bachelor of science degree in horticulture and ornamental horticulture from Cornell University, and in 1968 earned a master of science degree in education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

From 1942 to 45, he was stationed at South Post, Fort Myers, Va., in the War Department Operations Division of the Pentagon.

He was a member of the Garden Club of Richmond and was known for his flower gardens. He served with the Richmond Civic Association, the Pittsfield Shade Tree Commission, Pittsfield Beautiful, Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge and the American Hemerocallis Society.

He was a longtime volunteer at Tanglewood and at the Hillcrest campus of Berkshire Medical Center.

He and his wife, the former Priscilla Marie Zoraide Bessette, were married Nov. 22, 1958.

Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Richard Lee Boyce of Cincinnati, Gerard Ernest Boyce of Medway, Lawrence Michael Boyce of Sidney, Maine, and Christopher William Boyce of Flemington, N.J.; a daughter, Carolyn Anne McDonough of Winston-Salem, N.C., and nine grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Dick LeRoy Boyce will be conducted Monday at 3 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Pittsfieldby the Rev. Gae Rahn. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery in Richmond.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 5 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield. Among survivors are his sister-in-law, Joan Boyce of Binghamton, and a nephew, Ronald Boyce. His brother, Hazen Hubbard Boyce, died in 1999.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either St. Stephen's Table or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, both in care of the funeral home, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
