Norma C. Barriere, 83, of 50 Gristmill Road died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.
Born in Pittsfield on March 1, 1921, daughter of Ernest and Johanna Tresh Stoessel, she graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1939. She attended Smith College for two years, then received her nursing degree in 1976 through the Berkshire Community College Nursing Program.
Mrs. Barriere was employed in the medical field for 50 years. She worked as a registered nurse at the former St. Luke's Hospital and Berkshire Medical Center until retiring in 1990.
She was first employed as an operating room technician at the former Pittsfield General Hospital and its successor, BMC, beginning in 1940.
She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
Her husband, Bernard L. Barriere Sr. died Oct. 2, 1996.
She leaves a daughter, Linda A. Barriere of Richmond, with whom she resided; three sons, Bernard L. Barriere Jr. of Shaftsbury, Vt., and Thomas Barriere and Robert Barriere, both of Pittsfield, 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Marie Barriere Kinnas, died in 1987, and two sons, Richard L. Barriere Sr. who died July 31, 2000 and John Barriere who died May 14, 2003.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Norma C. Barriere, who died May 31, 2004, will be Thursday, June 3, at 10 from DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30 in St. Mary's Church by the Rev. Paul Bombardier, pastor.
Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 9 to 10, prior to the service. Mrs. Barriere also leaves several nieces and nephews.
