William J. Carter Sr

William J. Carter Sr., 86, of 1389 W. Housatonic St. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 10, 1918, son of George and Edith Armstrong Carter, he graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1936.

Mr. Carter was manager of the tool room and maintenance in the GE power transformer department for 47 1/2 years, retiring in 1984. He then worked at the family business, Proto Tech Industries, until October 2001.

He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where he was a former vestryman and had served on the building and grounds committee. He was involved in the Boy Scouts for 40 years and was a member of the Berkshire Model Railroad Club for 48 years.

He also belonged to Crescent Lodge of Masons for more than 40 years and had been a Berkshire County deputy sheriff for more than 24 years. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs and assistant secretary of the GE Foremen's Club.

He and his wife, the former Rita Thompson, were married Feb. 17, 1939.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Betty A. Harrison of Delmar, N.Y., and Nancy Olson of Pittsfield; three sons, William J. Carter Jr. of Worthington, Philip J. Carter of Gilford, N.H., and David B. Carter of Pittsfield; 19 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for William J. Carter Sr., who died May 26, 2004, will be conducted Friday at 10 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church by the Rev. James Dannals, pastor. Following cremation, burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the St. Stephen's memorial fund in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
