Elizabeth E. Caesar

Elizabeth E. Caesar, 75, formerly of 17 Daniels Ave., died Thursday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on April 1, 1929, daughter of Lloyd and Helen Frye Morehead, she was a 1946 graduate of Pittsfield High School and, in 1950, the first African-American to graduate from the former St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing.

Mrs. Caesar was employed as a registered nurse with Meridian Associates for several years, retiring in 1994. Before that, she worked at Hillcrest Hospital as a charge nurse in the McGee Substance Abuse Center.

She also was director of the Action for Opportunity on the West Side.

A longtime active member of Price Memorial AME Zion Church, she was also a member of the Neighborhood Advisory Council and the Christian Center, and volunteered for many other community organizations.

She enjoyed plants and cooking.

Her husband, Theodore Caesar, whom she married Dec. 14, 1963, died Feb. 8, 1991.

She leaves four sons, John K. Caesar, Lloyd Caesar and Theodore Caesar, all of North Adams, and Keith M. Caesar of Pittsfield; two daughters, Valerie Sistrunk of Pittsfield and Lynn Alvarez of Northport, Fla.; four brothers, Lloyd A. Morehead of Detroit, Donald N. Morehead of Bellevue, Wash., Melvin Morehead of Lenox and Bruce Morehead of Pasadena, Calif.; a sister, Rosemary Durant of Pittsfield; 25 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Deborah Branch, is deceased.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Elizabeth E. Caesar, 75, died May 13, 2004. The funeral will be conducted Monday at 11 at Price AME Zion Church by the Rev. William Durant and the Rev. Sturges P. Akers III.

Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow, May 16, from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or the American Cancer Society, both in care of the funeral home.

She also is survived by her daughters-in-law, Claire Caesar, Geraldine Keele and Kathy Hartman; her sons-in-laws, Curtis H. Sistrunk and Leon Alvarez; her sisters-in-law, Porsche Morehead, Nellie Morehead, Norma Morehead, Rose Morehead, and her brother-in-law, the Rev. Willard Durant. She was predeceased by another brother, John Morehead.
