Joseph J. Barry Jr., 82, of 44 Dan Ave. died Monday at Hillcrest Commons after a short illness.
Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 23, 1921, son of Joseph J. Barry Sr. and Anna Ryan Barry, he was a 1940 graduate of Pittsfield High School and a 1944 graduate of Holy Cross College. He also graduated from Midshipman School at Northwestern University and from the National Graduate Trust School of the American Bankers Association, which awarded him the designation of certified financial services counselor.
He resided in Great Barrington from 1955 until returning to Pittsfield in 1973.
Mr. Barry was employed in the financial field for 39 years, including 19 years as vice president of the former Pittsfield National Bank and its successor, First National Bank of Boston. He also had been chairman of the Great Barrington Finance Committee.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served with the 12th Seabee Special Battalion as a cargo officer in the Russell Islands and in the invasion of Okinawa. He was separated as a lieutenant.
Mr. Barry was elected vice president and trust officer of Pittsfield National in 1967; he retired in 1986. He began his career in 1947 as a securities salesman for Tifft Brothers, then joined the former Mahaiwe Bank in Great Barrington in 1955 as a trust officer. He later became a vice president.
He was a communicant of St. Teresa's Church. He was a member of the Wyantenuck Country Club for 30 years and served a term on its board of governors. He also was a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts; president of the board and treasurer and chairman of the finance committee of Fairview Hospital; a member of the finance committee of the Berkshire Musuem; president of the Great Barrington Rotary Club; former member of the Great Barrington School Building Needs Committee; life member of the Knights of Columbus, Mount Everett Council 513 and Bishop Conaty Assembly 395; member of the Berkshire County Deputy Sheriffs' Association, and life member of American Legion Post 68.
He was past exalted ruler of Pittsfield Lodge of Elks 272 and past district deputy of its Massachusetts West division. In 1968, he was elected to the board of directors of the Pittsfield Anti-Tuberculosis Association and served several terms as president and as treasurer.
He and his wife, the former M. Martha Quinlan, celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary Feb. 11. They were married in St. Joseph's Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Susan B. Seseske of Pittsfield and Marti M. Breau of Norton; two sons, John R. Barry of Houston and Brian J. Barry of Chelmsford, and nine grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Joseph J. Barry Jr., 82, of 44 Dan Ave. died Monday, May 10, 2004, at Hillcrest Commons. The funeral will be tomorrow, May 13, at 10:15 from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at St. Teresa's Church by the Rev. John J. Varley, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Anti-Tuberculosis Association or to St. Teresa's Church in care of the funeral home.
He leaves his wife of 54 years, M. Martha Barry; daughters, Susan B. Seseske and Marti M. Breau; two sons, John R. Barry and Brian J. Barry; and grandchildren, Scott, Daniel and Jeffrey Seseske; Emma, Christian and Brendan Breau, and Patrick, Conor and Ryan Barry.
He was predeceased by another grandson, Aaron Joseph Breau. Calling hours will be today, May 12, from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME.
