Stephen P. Mozden Sr

Stephen P. Mozden Sr., 88, of 23 Baldwin Ave. died yesterday at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center.

He had spent summers at the Shorelands in Becket since 1955.

Born in Woronoco on May 8, 1915, son of Piotr and Rosalia Laiser Mozden, he was educated in Three Rivers schools and was a 1932 graduate of Palmer High School. He had resided in Pittsfield since August 2003 and, prior to that, had resided in Palm Bay, Fla., for 22 years, and in Tamarack, Fla., for 27 years.

Mr. Mozden owned and operated West Springfield Bowling Lanes in West Springfield for 32 years, retiring in 1955.

He was a communicant of Notre Dame Church and of St. Matthew's Church in Becket.

He was a member and longtime secretary of the Western New England Bowl-ing Association, and a member of the Melbourne (Fla.) Men's Golf League.

He enjoyed fishing and golfing and was a Red Sox fan.

His first wife, the former Hedwig Baclowski, died in 1980.

He and his wife, the former Elaine Grandbois Crochiere of Pittsfield, were married July 4, 1981, in St. Matthew's Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Stephen P. Mozden Jr. of Suffield, Conn.; two daughters, Hedwig Wands of Charlestown, R.I., and Susan Hek of Fairfield, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Joanne Barber of St. Peter, Minn., and Elisabeth Ahart of Southampton; a stepson, George Crochiere of Becket; two brothers, Dr. Peter Mozden of Needham and Joseph Mozden of Claremont, N.H.; three sisters, Jenny Lopata of Three Rivers, Rose Tyburski of Thorndike and Irene Mozden of West Springfield; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Stephen P. Mozden Sr., who died April 30, 2004, will be Tuesday at 9:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Notre Dame Church celebrated by the Rev. Max Kish, parochial vicar.

Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus' Cemetery in Chicopee. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 8 at the funeral home. Mr. Mozden also leaves several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers and a sister.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
