Emile Julien Deuss, 85, of 5 Wallace Place died Wednesday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Charleroi, Belgium, on July 7, 1918, son of Leon and Coralie Dumery Deuss, he was educated there and graduated from the naval academy in Belgium.
After immigrating to the United States, he joined the Merchant Marine and served during World War II.
Mr. Deuss was a self-employed painter for 30 years. Before that, he worked as a painter in the maintenance department at the former St. Luke's Hospital and for area contractors.
He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a member of the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center and the Lt. John N. Truden Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448.
His wife, the former Anne A. Dion, whom he married Sept. 10, 1945, died Sept. 15, 2000.
He leaves a son, Jeffrey M. Deuss of Lawville, N.Y.; a brother, Charles Deuss of Dusseldorf, Germany, and two grandchildren. An infant son, Gerard Deuss, died in 1946.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Emile J. Deuss, who died April 28, 2004, is survived by his nephews, Scott Connor, Michael Connor, Thomas Fleming and Mark Fleming, and a niece. The funeral will be Wednesday, May 5, at 8:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph's Church celebrated by the Rev. Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow, May 4, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
