Kathleen "Kay" Coombs

Kathleen "Kay" Coombs, 79, of 35 Frederick St. died Tuesday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 21, 1925, daughter of Michael B. and Mary E. Maloy McCarron, she was a 1943 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She earned her degree in nursing from Johns Hopkins Hospital of Nursing in Baltimore and her bachelor of science degree from Columbia University in New York City.

A registered nurse, Mrs. Coombs was employed for 24 years by the former Hillcrest Hospital, retiring in 1994 as night supervisor. She had first worked at Johns Hopkins, and later at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center while attending Columbia University.

She also worked for the Pittsfield Visiting Nurse Association and the Pittsfield Health Department.

She was a communicant of St. Mark's Church and a member of the Hillcrest Hospital Alumni Association.

Her husband, Leonard R. Coombs, whom she married in 1947, died June 7, 1986.

She leaves a brother, Bernard J. McCarron of Pittsfield; her foster brother, John F. Connors of Pittsfield, and a niece, Patricia McCarron, with whom she resided.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Kathleen "Kay" Coombs, RN, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Berkshire Medical Center. The funeral will be conducted tomorrow, April 30, at 11 at DWYER FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. John Salatino, pastor of St. Mark's Church.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, April 29, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society or the Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter in care of the funeral home.

She leaves her nieces, Patricia McCarron, with whom she resided, Lauren McCarron Bolio and Colleen McCarron Hassan, all of Pittsfield, and a nephew, Michael E. McCarron of Dalton. She was predeceased by a sister, Eileen McCarron, a brother, Edward B. McCarron, who was killed in action in the Navy in World War II, and a foster brother, James P. Connors.
