Winifred Amelia Ackley, 83, of Dawsonville, Ga., formerly of Pittsfield, died Friday at White Oaks at Lanier nursing home in Cummings, Ga.
Born in Pittsfield on March 24, 1921, daughter of Robert and Myrtle McAuley Cannom, she graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1939. At age 47, she returned to school, graduating from a local nursing program.
She had resided in Dalton for 29 years before moving to Albuquerque, N.M., in the early 1980s. She moved to Dawsonville 20 years ago.
Mrs. Ackley was employed as a licensed practical nurse for 10 years at two local nursing homes.
While in Dalton, she was a member of First Congregational Church since 1961, and had sung in its choir for 10 years. She was a former member of Morningside Baptist Church in Pittsfield, and a member of Deer Creek Shores Presbyterian Church in Cummings.
She enjoyed bowling and playing cards, and had tried water skiing when she was 61.
Her husband, John Alfred Ackley, whom she married May 8, 1939, in Bennington, Vt., died Nov. 25, 1994.
She leaves two sons, Douglas Ackley of Peru and Bruce Ackley of Roswell, Ga.; four daughters, Coralie Ingraham and Maxine Tatro, both of Dalton, Wendy Fox of Woodstock, Ga., and Robin Marauszwski of Dawsonville, 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Memorial services for Winifred A. Ackley, who died April 23, 2004, will be conducted Saturday, May 1, at 2 at First Congregational Church of Dalton by the Rev. Robert Kyte. A reception will follow at the church.
