Raymond S. Winters

Raymond S. Winters, 92, of 48 Hale St. died Thursday at home.

Born in Pittsfield on April 22, 1912, son of William E. and Sarah Savage Winters, he was educated in Pittsfield schools.

He moved to Dalton in 1951.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was a communications specialist stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He received several medals and commendations.

Mr. Winters was employed by GE as a fabricator in the power transformer division, retiring May 1, 1974, with 32 years of service.

He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs, the Anthony J. DeAngelus Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the Benjamin F. Sullivan American Legion Post 155.

A Chicago Cubs fan, he also enjoyed attending Pittsfield Cubs games at Wahconah Park and working around his home.

His wife, the former Doris Chapman, whom he married May 30, 1941, in Hinsdale, died Sept. 7, 1979.

He leaves two daughters, Rae-Ann "Randy" Winters of Dalton, with whom he resided, and Linda L. Callahan of Pittsfield; a sister, Sarah V. Kacensky of Pittsfield; a brother, Daniel Winters of Pittsfield; two grandsons, and two great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Raymond S. Winters, who died April 22, 2004, will be conducted Monday at 11 at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. William Furey, pastor of Berkshire Union Chapel in Lanesboro.

Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 7. Mr. Winters also leaves his son-in-law, Richard J. Callahan of Pittsfield; his two beloved grandsons, Timothy R. Callahan and his wife, Judy, and Ryan R. Callahan; and two beloved great-grandchildren, Andrew C. Callahan and Lauren M. Callahan. He was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Kawicki, Katherine Weed and Florence Winters, and by eight brothers, William, Michael, George, John, Arthur, Joseph, Marshall and Clement Winters.

He also leaves many nieces and nephews and other family members and many friends who cared for him. The family wishes to invite everyone to a celebration of his life at Wahconah Country Club in Dalton immediately following the burial in the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dalton Ambulance and Rescue Fund, HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to the Visiting Nurse Association, all in care of the funeral home, 890 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
