Julia Rita Armstrong

Julia Rita Armstrong, 91, formerly of 42 Linden St., Michelle Manor, died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center.

She had resided at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility since Aug. 5, 2003.

Born in Watertown on May 30, 1912, daughter of Julio and Serafina Daniele Melle, she moved to Pittsfield at age 2 with her family and attended local schools.

She had lived with her son, John D. Armstrong, at his East Hartford, Conn., home for three years before entering the nursing home.

Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Armstrong was first employed in 1928 by the former Glix-Brandt Co., then by GE as a tester and later as an inspector in the capacitor department until 1947.

She was a communicant of Notre Dame Church.

She was a member of the Senior Center, Golden Agers and VFW Post 448 Ladies' Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, music and gardening.

Her husband, Howard C. Armstrong, whom she married Feb. 14, 1946, died April 11, 1977.

She leaves her son, of Pittsfield and East Hartford.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Julia Melle Armstrong, who died April 15, 2004, will be Tuesday, April 20, at 10 from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor.

Burial will be in the family plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Survivors include a son, John D. Armstrong of East Hartford, Conn., and Pittsfield; longtime friend Vanessa Stevens of East Hartford, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and -nephews, and great-grandnieces and -nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Elizabeth Metivier, Mary Ascari and Catherine Melle, and four brothers, Michael Melle, Nicholas R. Melle, Frank J. Melle and Dominick J. Melle.
