Robert S. Townend

Robert S. Townend, 83, died Thursday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.

He had resided at Melbourne Place for two years.

Born in Providence, R.I., on March 21, 1921, son of Daniel and Mabel Swallow Townend, he earned his degree in electrical engineering in 1942 from Rhode Island State College.

Mr. Townend was employed by GE for 40 years, first in Schenectady, N.Y., and later in Pittsfield. He retired from the missile and ordnance systems department in 1982.

He was a member of First Church of Christ Science of Boston. He enjoyed hiking, sailing, music and creating games. A ham radio operator since grade school, his call letters were W1RII.

He also enjoyed photography, using the name Trebor to photograph weddings, friends and family. He was a member of the GE Elfun Society and the Berkshire Institute of Lifetime Learning, and a charter member and first commander of the Berkshire Power Squadron.

He and his wife, the former Charlotte Flachsland, were married June 28, 1947, in Oswego, N.Y.

Besides his wife, of Pittsfield, he leaves two sons, Dana Robert Townend of Alexandria, Va., and Bruce Carl Townend of Windsor; three daughters, Donna Louise Scanlon of Beverly, Victoria Lynn Timmerman of Ramona, Calif., and Nancy Ann Tarjick of Pittsfield, and six grandchildren. Another daughter, Claire Townend, died at birth.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private family memorial service for Robert Townend, who died April 8, 2004, will be held at a later date. There will be no calling hours. WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., is in charge of arrangements.

Among survivors are his three grandsons, Brendan R. Townend, Christopher L. Timmerman and Thomas J. Tarjick Jr., three granddaughters, Megan A. and Danielle K. Townend and Sara A. Timmerman; nephews and niece Ernest, Walter, Janet and Peter Hirsch; three sons-in-law, Allen Scanlon, Lee Timmerman and Thomas Tarjick Sr., and two daughters-in-law, Engin and Claire Townend.

He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth O. Hirsch, and her husband, George. Sharing the hobbies he lovedwith friends and family gave him great joy.
