Florence Cole, 96, died yesterday at Hillcrest Commons where she had resided since 1995.
Born in Adams on Oct. 5, 1907, daughter of Charles and Marie Russette Cole, she attended Adams schools for eight years.
She was employed as a clerk in the Veterans Affairs office in Albany, retiring to Silver Springs, Fla., in 1950. From there she moved to Ocala, Fla., where she owned and operated Cloister Motel, returning to Pittsfield in 1987 so she could be near her daughter and grandchildren.
She lived in Rose Manor until she was admitted to the former Willowood of Pittsfield in 1995.
She enjoyed music, arts and crafts and working in the gift shop.
Her husband, Herbert A. Cole, whom she married May 24, 1941, died Oct. 9, 1986.
She leaves her daughter, Halcyon M. Wheeler of Lebanon Springs, N.Y.; a son, Arthur H. Cole of Florida; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was a Gold Star Mother. A son, Earl W. Williams, predeceased her in World War II while serving in the Navy.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private memorial service for immediate family will be held at a later date for Mrs. Florence Cole, who died April 9, 2004. There will be no calling hours.
Donations in her memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Cole was predeceased by three sisters, Jeanette Oullette, Laura Hartwig and Mary Celeste, and a brother, Charlie Cole.
