Raymond Joseph Pellerin

Raymond Joseph Pellerin, 83, of 190 Brown St. died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Bennington, Vt., on Jan. 25, 1921, son of George and Grace Couture Pellerin, he was educated in Pittsfield public schools and St. Joseph's Central High School.

A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he enlisted in February 1943 and served as a private first class in the 401st Glider Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, known as the "Screaming Eagles."

He participated in the Normandy landing on June 6, 1944, and was so severely injured on June 14 that he was at first presumed dead.

He returned to the United States in August 1944 and was 100-percent disabled as a result of his injuries.

He was presented with the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and the 101st Airborne Division Association.

Mr. Pellerin also was an avid stamp collector.

He leaves two sisters, Diana M. Chojnowski, with whom he resided and his caregiver since the war, and Rita Pettibone of Southboro, and his niece and nephew, Gracemary O'Connell of Pittsfieldand Louis Chojnowski Jr. of Pittsfield, who helped care for him.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Raymond Joseph Pellerin, who died March 19, 2004, will be Tuesday, March 23, at 9:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 in St. Charles' Church by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor.

Burial with full military honors will follow in Park Lawn Cemetery, Bennington, Vt. There will be no calling hours. The family has requested the omission of flowers and food, and suggests that contributions in memory of Mr. Pellerin be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.

Mr. Pellerin was predeceased by two brothers, Robert J. Pellerin and George J. Pellerin Sr., and four sisters, Lea Bordeau, Rosanna Daoust, Irene Plumbo and Blanche Fox. He leaves nieces and nephews.
