Catherine "Maureen" Birge, 73, of Pittsfield Road died Friday at Mercy Hospital in Springfield.
She was a former 24-year resident of Lee.
Born in Easthampton on Oct. 20, 1930, daughter of Patrick and Margaret Forhan Hourihan, she was a 1947 graduate of the former St. Michael's High School in Northampton. She earned a bachelor of arts degree, cum laude, in education and Spanish from Our Lady of the Elms College, now Elms College, in Chicopee in 1951.
While in Lee, she was a substitute teacher at St. Mary's School for many years. She then moved to Pittsfield and to Lenox. She had first taught in Easthampton Public Schools.
Mrs. Birge was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Lee and a former communicant of Immaculate Church in Easthampton.
She was also a former member of the Massachusetts Teachers' Association.
She leaves a son, James F. Birge Jr. of Camp Hill, Pa.; two daughters, Sister Mary Kate Birge, SSJ, of Emmitsburg, Md., and Elizabeth R. Birge of Montclair, N.J.; a brother, James P. Hourihan of Holyoke; four sisters, Mildred Hughes of Del Mar, N.J., Muriel Hourihan of Chicopee, Merilyn Chlosta of Easthampton and Margaret Hourihan of Northampton, and five granddaughters. She also leaves her former husband, James F. Birge Sr. of Lenox.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Catherine Hourihan Birge will be Saturday, March 20, at 9 at Immaculate Conception Church, with burial to follow in St. Brigid's Cemetery, both in Easthampton.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to O'BRIEN FUNERAL HOME. Memorial gifts may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph's Retirement Fund at Mont Marie, 34 Westfield Road, Ste 1, Holyoke, MA 01040.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Patricia Pardo and June Moynihan.
