Walter Legrand Wheat Jr

Walter Legrand Wheat Jr., 70, of 23 Ivy Lane died yesterday morning at home after a long illness.

He was a senior vice president and trust investment officer at Bank Boston.

Born in Natick on Sept. 15, 1933, son of Walter L. Wheat Sr. and Marjorie Lange Wheat, he attended schools in Natick. He was a 1951 graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and a 1955 graduate of Harvard University, where he earned a degree in economics. He also graduated from Stonier Graduate School of Banking in New Brunswick, N.J.

He joined the former First Agricultural Bank's trust division in 1960, was named assistant trust officer in 1961 and became a trust investment officer in 1965. He was promoted in 1972 to senior vice president of Bank Boston. He became a chartered financial analyst in 1971. He retired Sept. 15, 1998, after 38 years of service. Prior to joining the bank, he was a registered representative of Kidder, Peabody & Co. in Boston.

Upon his retirement, the bank named a conference room in his honor for recognition of his years of service.

He was a member of the YMCA and had served as its past president and in 1985 he received the Fred Lincks Award for his many years of service.

He was also a member of the American Institute of Banking.

A member and deacon at South Congregational Church, Mr. Wheat was active on several church boards, as well as the board of the Salvation Army.

He was a past member of Junior Achievement, and had been a coach for minor and Little League baseball. He was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed camping and gardening.

He and his wife, the former Mary E. Bigelow, were married June 20, 1959, in Natick.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, C. Geoffrey Wheat of Prunedale, Calif., and William Bigelow Wheat of Arlington, Texas; three daughters, Dorothy Wheat Skutnik and Debbie L. Curry, both of Pittsfield, and Betsy Wheat Nichols of Hinsdale, and 12 grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A public memorial service for Walter L. Wheat Jr., 70, who died March 11, 2004, will be Monday at 11 at South Congregational Church, 110 South St., with the Rev. Joel Huntington, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in Rockport. There will be no calling hours. The church is handicapped-accessible and is located in the rear of the church. The family will greet relatives and friends immediately following the service for a reception in the church parlor.

Mr. Wheat is lovingly survived by his 12 adored grandchildren, Andrew Walker, Sean Walker, Dean Nichols, John Skutnik, Samantha Skutnik, Marissa Skutnik and Jenna Skutnik, Rebecca Curry, Thomas Curry, Ted Wheat, Anna Wheat and Nicholas Askew. Also survived by devoted sons-in-law, Joseph Skutnik, Paul Nichols and Thomas Curry, and by daughters-in-law, Nancy and Sonia Wheat.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who wish may make memorials to South Congregational Church or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, both in care of the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is handling the arrangements.
