Edmund M. "Red" Poopor

Edmund M. "Red" Poopor, 83, of 99 Curtis Ave. died yesterday at Providence Care Center of Lenox, where he had resided for a month.

Born in Dalton on March 12, 1920, son of Bart and Anna Dowling Poopor, he was a 1938 graduate of the former Dalton High School, where he was a member of the Northern Berkshire League basketball championship team in his junior year.

He also graduated from the Akron (Ohio) Hospital radiological technologist program.

Mr. Poopor was employed as an X-ray technician for 31 years, retiring in 1982 from Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. He also had worked at the former House of Mercy, St. Luke's and Pittsfield General hospitals.

He was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church and a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 411 in Dalton.

He was a past president of the Massachusetts Radiological Technologists Association.

He was an accomplished amateur photographer, and enjoyed bowling.

His wife, the former Mary E. Hoctor, whom he married June 17, 1944, in St. Agnes' Church, died Oct. 27, 1985.

He leaves three sons, Mark J. Poopor of Dalton, Dennis B. Poopor of Windsor Locks, Conn., and Brian T. Poopor of Pittsfield; a daughter, Ann-Marie Poopor of Tewksbury, and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Edmund M. "Red" Poopor, 83, of Dalton died March 9, 2004. A Celebration of his life will be held Friday at 9:15 at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Agnes' Church by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor.

Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 3 to 7 at the funeral home. Mr. Poopor also leaves his four grandchildren, Keith and his wife, Caroline Olliver; Shana and her husband, Aaron Crow, Jeffrey and Amy.

He also leaves his daughters-in-law, Jean Poopor and Susan Luba; his brother- and sister-in-law, Franklin and Eileen Quinn, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, James Poopor in May 1945 and Bartholomew J. Poopor on Feb. 28, 1981; a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Galliher on Sept. 18, 2003, and a grandson, Michael Donovanon Feb. 6, 2004.
