Florence Elizabeth Markham

Florence Elizabeth Markham, 102, formerly of Providence Court Apartments, died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center.

She had resided at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility for three years.

Born in South Egremont on Aug. 21, 1901, daughter of John and Carrie E. Collins Murphy, she graduated from the former Searles High School in Great Barrington.

She had lived in Stockbridge, Sheffield, Risingdale, Housatonic and Great Barrington, and was one of the first residents to move into Providence Court in 1981.

Mrs. Markham was employed as a switchboard operator from 1922 to 1959 in Housatonic and Stockbridge, and had worked 22 years for the former New England Telephone and Telegraph Co.

She was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church.

She enjoyed playing bingo and cards, doing crafts and the Jumble word puzzle in the daily newspaper, and participated in social events while at the nursing home.

She was an avid reader of mysteries and westerns. On her 100th birthday, she was recognized by Willard Scott on NBC's "Today Show."

Her husband, Franklin H. Markham, whom she married May 15, 1924, died Nov. 18, 1959.

She leaves a son, Thomas J. Markham of Mountlake Terrace, Wash.; a daughter, Theresa M. Ransiear of Everett, Wash.; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren. Another son, Francis C. "Stub" Markham Sr., and a stepson, Daniel L. Markham, are deceased.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Florence E. Murphy Markham, 102, who died March 5, 2004, will be Wednesday at 9:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey Deeker, CSS, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Bridget's Cemetery, Housatonic. Calling hours at the funeral home will be today, March 9, from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the activity program at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility in care of the funeral home.

Mrs. Markham is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Theresa Langlois Markham; three brothers, Thomas, John and William Murphy; a sister, Frances M. Murphy Taxter; a grandson, Thomas J. Markham, and a granddaughter, Dinah L. Markham Houfek.
