Harvey B. (Habib S.) Haddad, 88, of 234 Dawes Ave. died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.
A longtime businessman and civic activist in Berkshire County, he had been president of Haddad Rug Co. for 40 years.
Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 20, 1915, son of Solomon and Amelia Haddad Haddad, he was a 1933 graduate of Pittsfield High School, where he played basketball and football. He also was on the ski team.
A decorated Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, he served as a first sergeant with the 394th Bombardment Squadron from 1942 to 1946 in the southern Philippines, New Guinea, Borneo and the western Pacific.
Mr. Haddad first worked with his father as a peddler of linens and textiles here and in the Lake George, N.Y., area. He was manager of his family's former Sugar Bowl Restaurant on North Street until 1952.
He then became president of Haddad Rug, established by his father, until his semi-retirement in 1992. He continued working every day until last October, when poor health forced him to stop.
A communicant of Sacred Heart Church, he served as an usher, worked on the annual Stewardship Appeal and was a proctor for Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes. He was the first Pittsfield resident to receive the Pope Pius X award for volunteerism.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a 50-year member of the Rotary Club, past president of the former Speakers' Club, a member of the Lebanese American Club and past president of the Egremont Parent-Teachers Association.
He was one of the founding members of the Mount Greylock Ski Club and among the first to ski down Thunderbolt Trail.
He and his wife, the former Catherine Bowers, were married Sept. 3, 1951, in St. Mary's Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, H. Paul Haddad, S. William Haddad and John F. Haddad, all of Pittsfield; two daughters, Juraye Moran of Pittsfield and Michelle Pullano of Dalton; a brother, Edward Haddad of Pittsfield; a sister, Lillian Johansson of Pittsfield, and 12 grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Habib S. (Harvey B.) Haddad, age 88, who died March 8, 2004, will be Thursday at 10:15 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.
Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Rotary Club Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
He is survived by his loving grandchildren, Erin N. and Devon R. Moran; Jenaye K., Daniel P. and Derrick F. Haddad; S. William Haddad Jr.; Nathaniel M., Jared A. and Skylar P. Haddad; Elaina C. and Jeffrey A. Pullano, and Gabriel I. Haddad; his sons-in-law, Russell Moran and Dr. Mark Pullano; and his daughters-in-law, Susan and Cynthia Haddad.
He was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Haddad, and two sisters, Matilda "Tillie" Haddad and Rose Haddad Andrews.
