Hettie M. Diggens, 93, formerly of 99 Valentine Road, died Saturday at Springside of Pittsfield, where she had resided since 1992.
Born in Greenwich, England, on Dec. 15, 1910, daughter of William and Bertha Barclay Duncan, she was educated in schools in England, where she graduated from high school and art school.
She moved to Pittsfield in 1988, and prior to that had resided in North Adams.
A homemaker, she had worked at one time with her late husband, George Diggens, as a bookkeeper at Diggens Television & Repairs in North Adams.
Mrs. Diggens was a member of United Methodist Church of Lenox and a former longtime member of United Methodist Church in North Adams. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Hulvits Opera Company in London.
She was a well-known landscape artist throughout Berkshire County and had exhibited her work at the North Adams Fall Foliage Art Show and at the Adams Art Festival, where she won numerous awards.
She and her husband were married in England on Nov. 26, 1939. He died Nov. 30, 1985.
She leaves a daughter, Janice R. Diggens-Clark of Pittsfield; three sons, Douglas Diggens of New Holland, Pa., Clive Diggens of Canaan, Conn., and Paul Diggens of Tariffville, Conn., and nine grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Hettie M. Diggens, who died March 6, 2004, will be conducted tomorrow at 1:30 at United Methodist Church of Lenox by the Rev. Eric Dupee, pastor.
There will be no calling hours. At Mrs. Diggens' request, she will be cremated and her ashes scattered at home in England. The family invites everyone to 99 Valentine Road immediately following the memorial service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Springside Nursing Home Residents Activities Fund in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
