James H. Ceder

James H. Ceder, 87, of Beecher Lane died Wednesday evening at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center.

Born in Moline, Ill., on Feb. 11, 1917, son of Hjalmer and Louise Schmidt Ceder, he attended schools there and was a 1935 graduate of Moline High School.

He later attended the University of Chicago and was a 1953 graduate of Purdue University in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he majored in physics and received his bachelor of science degree.

Mr. Ceder was an Army veteran of World War II, who participated in the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.

He was employed as an engineer by GE, working briefly in Schenectady, N.Y., and later Pittsfield in the power transformer division, retiring in 1982 after 27 years of service.

Mr. Ceder attended the Church on the Hill.

He was a member and former chairman of the Lenox Department of Public Works Commission.

He also served on the Lenox Town Government Study Committee and the Lenox Housing Authority.

He leaves his wife, the former Marjorie Hendrickson, whom he married in Indianapolis on May 25, 1957; a daughter, Leslie Ceder of Pittsfield, and a brother, Robert W. Ceder of Sheboygan Falls, Wis.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral of Mr. James H. Ceder will be conducted Monday, March 8, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Church on the Hill in Lenox by the Rev. Natalie Shiras, pastor.

Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Lenox. Calling hours at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME will be Sunday evening from 4 to 7. Mr. Ceder is also survived by his son-in-law, Douglas J. Durante.

He was predeceased by a brother, John W. Ceder, in November 2002. Those who wish to may make donations in Mr. Ceder's memory to the Lenox Library in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
