Sister Mary Cecilius

Sister Mary Cecilius, 89, of the Sisters of Providence in Holyoke, died Monday in the Providence Place infirmary.
She had served on the faculty of the former St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing and later of the Berkshire Medical Center medical technology program for 18 years, and had been supervisor of St. Luke's laboratory for 13 years.
Born in Springfield in 1914 as Helen Isabel Griffin, daughter of Edward and Mary Leamy Griffin, she graduated from the St. Luke's School of Medical Technology in 1935 and later earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from St. Joseph's College in West Hartford, Conn.
She entered the Sisters of Providence in 1932.
In 1970, Sister Cecilius joined the faculty of Springfield Technical Community College, where she taught in the medical technology program for 16 years.
She first worked as a laboratory technician at St. Vincent's Hospital in Worcester for 11 years. She also taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine at St. Thomas' Parish in West Springfield.
She leaves a sister, Gertrude Bakos of Chicopee.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The wake for Sister Mary Cecilius, who died March 1, 2004, will be today, March 3, from 3 to 7:30 at Providence Place, 5 Gamelin St., Holyoke. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, March 4, at 10 in the Providence Place Chapel.
DILLON FUNERAL HOME, 124 Chestnut St., Holyoke, has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Providence, 5 Gamelin St., Holyoke, MA 01040.
She also leaves her nieces, Isabel Brosnan and Carole Rege of Chicopee and a nephew, Stephen Bakos of South Hadley, four grandnieces and a grandnephew, and her Sisters in Community.
