B. May Payne

B. May Payne, 87, of 8 Whipple St. died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Blandford on Aug. 18, 1916, daughter of Perry W. and Elsie M. Ripley Chase, she was raised by her adoptive parents, Oscar B. and Jessie Dugay Holmes.

She attended Chester schools and graduated from Chester High School and from Bay Path College in East Longmeadow. She later received her nursing diploma through the American Institute of Practical Nursing's home-study course.

A licensed practical nurse, Mrs. Payne was employed at a hospital in Inverness, Fla., from 1968 until 1971.

She attended Becket Center Church and enjoyed cooking, drawing and animals, especially horses and dogs.

Her first husband, Roy Arthur Cooper; second husband, Charles R. "Buster" VanWert, and husband, Edward Payne, are deceased.

She leaves four sons, Dale O. Cooper of Williamston, S.C., David R. Cooper of Pittsfield, Duane M. Cooper of Pelzer, S.C., and Donald G. Cooper of Adams, nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for B. May Payne, who died Feb. 19, 2004, will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 28, at Berkshire Union Chapel in Lanesboro by the Rev. William D. Furey, pastor. Burial will be at a later date in Becket Center Church Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church from 10 until time for the service.

Following the service, the family will receive relatives and friends in the church's fellowship hall. Mrs. Payne was a loving, caring mother who loved God and will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

She is lovingly survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Marjorie Farnum, Grace Miner and Viola Keiderling, and by three brothers, Perry Ripley Chase, Henry Jennings Holmes and Donald Holmes.
