Donald M. Packard

Donald M. Packard, 87, of 26 Walden Lane died yesterday at Providence Care Center of Lenox, where he had resided for 14 months.

Born in Eastport, Maine, on March 12, 1916, the son of the Rev. Herbert L. Packard and Grace Dyer Packard, he attended schools there, in Windsor and in Crown Point, N.Y. After graduating from Crown Point (N.Y.) High School in 1936, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in Pittsfield.

An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Packard served in England, France, Luxembourg and Germany, and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Mr. Packard was employed by GE until his retirement in 1985. Before that, he managed the bakery at the former St. Luke's Hospital from 1961 until it closed in 1976.

He and his first wife, former Eda Casucci, owned and operated Edadon Bakery for 14 years. They sold the business to Table Talk Co. of Springfield in 1961.

Mr. Packard was a longtime communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of its choir. He also was a charter member of the Pittsfield chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America and its Berkshire Hillsmen Chorus.

He also sang in several other barbershop quartets over the years.

His first wife, whom he married July 16, 1938, died Nov. 24, 1986.

He and his wife, the former Anne Nelson Kerr, were married June 17, 1989, in Agawam.

Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Vivian Dorsel of Richmond, Sandra Bushey of Old Chatham, N.Y., and Tenia Bannick of Concord, N.H.; five sons, Jerome Packard of Champaign, Ill., Daniel Packard of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Paul Packard of North Providence, R.I., Mario Packard of Pasadena, Calif., and Perry Packard of Quincy; a brother, Leslie Packard of Agawam; two stepdaughters, Linda Turcotte of Holliston and Susan Halloran of Framingham; three stepsons, David Kerr and Peter Kerr, both of Needham, and Bruce Kerr of Feeding Hills, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Donald M. Packard will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 10 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor of Mount Carmel Church.

Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow, Feb. 24, from 4 to 7. He was predeceased by four brothers and a sister.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
