Milton I. Shaw

Milton I. Shaw, 78, of 41 Pleasant St. died Feb. 11 at home.
Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 28, 1925, son of Harry G. and Mildred Sweeney Shaw, he was a 1944 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
A World War II and Korean War veteran, he served with the Navy aboard the USS Harry E. Hubbard as a gunner's mate third class during World War II, and received several medals.
He was honorably discharged in 1947. He served during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952 on the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard, also as a gunner's mate third class.
Mr. Shaw was a self-employed painter and wallpaper hanger from 1947 to 1965, and from 1965 to 1974 was employed in the maintenance department at Berkshire Medical Center. In 1974, he became a painter for Sedgwick & Novick in Pittsfield. He retired in 1990.
He was a communicant of Notre Dame Church, and served as past president of the Berkshire Museum Camera Club. He was a member of the Connecticut Valley Mineral Club, a member and volunteer at the Senior Center in Pittsfield, and a member of the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades.
Mr. Shaw photographed many weddings throughout Berkshire County. He enjoyed mineralogy, woodcarving and woodworking.
He was an instructor in soapstone carving from 1994 to 2003 at Eastern Federation Lapidary workshops in Little Switzerland, N.C.
He leaves his wife, the former Mary Elaine Goodrich, whom he married June 16, 1946, in San Francisco; a son, Michael G. Shaw of Stillwater, Okla.; a daughter, Cynthia T. Nemser-Hall of Muncie, Ind.; a brother, Clinton H. Shaw of New Lebanon, N.Y., and four grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Milton I. Shaw, 78, who died Feb. 11, 2004, will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, at 8:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, MA, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at Notre Dame Church. Entombment will follow at St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials in his memory be made to Hospice Care of the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
Mr. Shaw is lovingly survived by his adored grandchildren, Kathryn Shaw, David Shaw, Jeremy and Rachel Nemser and by son-in-law Kenneth Hall and daughter-in-law Laura Shaw.
