Joan C. Sockey

Joan C. Sockey, 79, of 30 Buel St. died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Newport, R.I., on May 25, 1924, daughter of Harry H. and Mary A. Fitzgerald Gear, she was a 1941 graduate of St. Catherine's Academy in Newport.

She and her husband moved to Pittsfield in 1959.

She was a communicant of St. Charles' Church and belonged to many clubs and organizations, including Catholics for the Unborn of the Berkshires, Catholics United for the Faith, Right to Life, the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima and the Nocturnal Adoration Society.

She took part in many vigils and was a regular contributor to The Berkshire Eagle letters to the editor.

She leaves her husband, E. William Sockey Jr., who she married on Dec. 26, 1942, in Newport.

Besides her husband, she leaves four sons, E. William Sockey III of Cincinnati, Stephen P. Sockey of Kirkland, Wash., Dennis J. Sockey of Tyngsboro and Glenn P. Sockey of Milford, N.H.; four daughters, Joan D. Sabato of Pittsfield, Linda A. Birch of Otego, N.Y., Gail Six of Northford, Conn., and Paula M. Laurin of Pittsfield, 41 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Joan C. Sockey, who died Feb. 12, 2004, will be Monday, Feb. 16, at 9:15 from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Charles' Church, celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday, Feb. 15, from 2 to 5. If friends desire, donations may be made to the American Legion in care of the funeral home.

Mrs. Sockey was a woman of hope and will be remembered as an exemplary wife and mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was predeceased by a grandson, Gregory Six. "In your great mercy, forgive our sinfulness, heal our brokenness and renew our hearts, that we may be one in You.
