Emil J. Rist

Emil J. Rist, 78, of 237 Wahconah St. died Thursday at home following a long illness.

Born in Guilford, Vt., on Dec. 23, 1925, son of Harry and Cassie Williams Rist, he attended schools there and the Kurn Hattin Home for Boys in Westminster, Vt.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a private, first class, construction foreman from March 1944 until March 1946 in Company C, 31st Engineer Combat Battalion.

He participated in the Battle of the Bulge as well as battles in the Rhineland, the Ardennes and in central Europe, where he was wounded in action in March and December 1945. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.

Mr. Rist was employed by the GE power transformer division for 38 years, retiring in April 1986.

He was a member of Pilgrim Memorial Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448, American Legion Post 68 and Disabled American Veterans, and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He and his wife, the former Carolyn Ruth Hammer, were married Aug. 24, 1947, in Vermont.

Besides his wife, he leaves five sons, Glenn, Gary and Leslie Rist, all of Pittsfield, Bradley Rist of Paradise, Calif., and Blair Rist of Bonita, Calif.; five daughters, Judi Salvadori of Vallejo, Calif., Joan Lampro of Vista, Calif., Lorraine Flynn of Pittsfield, Lynne Huckle of Benicia, Calif., and Brenda Rosier of Pittsfield; two brothers, Frank O. Rist of East Hartford, Conn., and Charles H. Rist of South Wallingford, Vt., a sister, Genie Roberts of Pittsfield, and 11 grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Emil J. Rist, 78, who died Feb. 12, 2004, will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 11 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Corey Loder, pastor of Pilgrim Memorial Church.

Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in his memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to Pilgrim Memorial Church in care of the funeral home.

Mr. Rist also leaves his loving grandchildren, Marc and Robyn Salvadori, Jason and Ryan Lampro, Kari Keenan, Ashley Flynn, Nicole, Michelle and Alyssa Huckle, and Amanda and Jacob Rosier. He was predeceased by a sister, Anna Welch, and a brother, Harry Rist.
