James Norris Ward

James Norris Ward, 64, of 6 Claremont Road died yesterday morning at his home from leukemia.

Born Dec. 15, 1939, in Altoona, Pa., son of James Albert and Mary Edna Norris Ward, he was a 1957 graduate of Altoona High School.

He moved to Pittsfield in 1959 and was a graduate of GE's toolmakers apprentice course.

He had resided in Dalton for 32 years.

He served in the Army Reserves Special Forces Unit.

Mr. Ward was employed by GE for 32 years, retiring in 1993 as a quality-control engineer. He received his engineer certificate in locomotives from Conrail in Pennsylvania for operating trains. He had been involved in the restoration of steam locomotives in Pennsylvania.

He was an active member of the Berkshire Mountain Search and Rescue Team, a member of the Dalton Emergency Management Team, was involved in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and was a volunteer at the Berkshire Scenic Railroad in Lenox as an engineer and conductor.

He was a volunteer teacher for Maps and Compass, a survival instructor for the Massachusetts Environmental Affairs and the Department of Environmental Management, and a member of the Red Cross Military Family Support Group.

Mr. Ward was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church, and enjoyed camping, hunting, canoeing, traveling and building cedar wood strip canoes.

He leaves his wife, the former Mary E. Gauthier, whom he married June 10, 1967, at Notre Dame Church in Pittsfield; three sons, James A. Ward and David J. Penna-Ward, both of Pittsfield, and Michael E. Ward of Jackson, Wyo., and three grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for James N. Ward, 64, who died Feb. 12, 2004, will be held Monday at 9:15 a.m. from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes' Church, celebrated by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor.

Following cremation, burial will be in the spring in Ashuelot Cemetery, Dalton. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.

Mr. Ward is lovingly survived by his three grandchildren, Christopher Ward, Rachael Ward and Isabella Penna-Ward, and by his two daughters-in-law, Paula Ward and Caterina Penna-Ward.
