Charles T. Gibson

Charles T. Gibson, 68, of Milton, N.C., a former resident of Pittsfield, died Feb. 3 in a work-related accident in Danville, Va.

Born in Schenectady, N.Y., on Aug. 30, 1935, son of Robert and Margaret Stone Gibson, he graduated from Deerfield Academy and Williams College. He earned a bachelor of arts degree and a master of science degree in engineering from Harvard University.

Mr. Gibson became employed with IBM in 1962, serving the company in areas of marketing, engineering and business until his retirement in 1988.

He enjoyed vintage and contemporary car racing.

Mr. Gibson was a ski coach at Harvard, and for two decades was an alpine official. He also served as alpine technical director at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games at Lake Placid.

Mr. Gibson served as president of the U.S. Ski Association, where he played a key role in reshaping the association, pioneering a fair and responsive ranking system to include innovations in timing, scoring and results in alpine.

He founded an organization for the education of U.S. ski coaches. In 2001, he was inducted into the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame, Ishperning, Mich.

In 1977, Mr. Gibson founded SascoSports in Fairfield, Conn. The business became a leading supplier of goods and services for vintage and contemporary racers. Several years ago, Mr. Gibson and his partner, Dave Handy, relocated SascoSports to Alton, Va., at the Virginia International Raceway.

He served on the board of directors and as a competition instructor of the Vintage Sports Car Club of America Inc. He operated the Lime Rock Park Vintage Festival in Connecticut for more than a decade, one of the most successful vintage racing events in the country.

He leaves a brother, George Gibson of Hartland, Vt.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Charles Gibson will be held at the First Church of Christ Congregational in Pittsfield on Friday, March 12, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Richard L. Floyd, pastor, officiating. There will be no calling hours.

Private burial will be in the Pittsfield Cemetery in Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, donations in Charles Gibson's name can be made to one or more of the following charities: Deerfield Academy, Deerfield, MA 02163; U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation, P.O. Box 100, Park City, UT 84060, designated for the U.S. Ski Team Fund; Williams College, 75 Park St., Williamstown, MA 01267; the DPC Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1039, Danville, VA 24543.
