Herbert John Lewis Jr.

Herbert John Lewis Jr., 76, of 55 High St. died Monday morning at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield after suffering an apparent heart attack.

Born in Pittsfield on July 2, 1927, son of Herbert J. Lewis Sr. and Marie LeGoff Lewis, he attended Dalton schools and was a 1945 graduate of the former Dalton High School.

A Coast Guard veteran of World War II, he served as seaman, second class. He served as a radar specialist in the Army from 1951 to 1953 and was honorably discharged as a sergeant, first class.

A cabinetmaker, Mr. Lewis was a self-employed carpenter and home builder for 30 years, retiring in 1992. Prior to that, he had been employed by Galusha and Knickerbocker Builders for 15 years.

Mr. Lewis was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church and a member of the Berkshire Gas and Steam Engine Club.

He enjoyed using the replica of an 1887 wood-splitter he built as well as the gin pole he constructed to lift heavy logs onto it.

He also enjoyed gardening, beekeeping, reading, helping others, tag sales and flea markets.

He and his wife, the former Ruth Adams, were married Nov. 6, 1954, in St. Agnes' Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Theresa A. Bissaillon of Pittsfield, Kathleen E. Fresia of Dalton and Anne M. Cord of Wilmington, N.C., and three grandchildren. A son, Herbert J. Lewis III, died Aug. 7, 1975.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Herbert John Lewis Jr., who died Feb. 9, 2004, will be held Friday, Feb. 13, at 9:15 from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Agnes' Church by the Rev. Daniel B. Brunton.

Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dalton Ambulance Fund in care of the funeral home, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
