Jean Elizabeth Torres

Jean Elizabeth Torres, 86, of 77 Otis Ave. died Wednesday at Hillcrest Commons in Pittsfield, where she had resided for the past four weeks.

Born in Hillburn, N.Y., on May 31, 1917, daughter of Arthur and Adele DeGroat VanDunk, she attended schools there.

She also graduated from nursing school in Paterson, N.J.

She had resided in Dalton since 1954; previously, she had lived in Pittsfield.

She had been employed as a licensed practical nurse at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield for 20 years, retiring in 1984. Prior to this, she had worked at Franklin County Hospital in Greenfield and the former St. Luke's Hospital in Pittsfield. Following her retirement, she had worked as a sampler at Price Chopper in Pittsfield.

Mrs. Torres was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Dalton, where she sang in the choir and helped with many dinners and craft fairs.

She leaves a daughter, D. Karen Pease of Dalton; two sons, Peter L. Torres of Dalton and Michael J. Torres of Huntingdon Valley, Pa.; a sister, Charity M. Perry of Schenectady, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two other sons, Jeffrey and Arthur Torres.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Jean E. VanDunk Torres, 86, who died Feb. 4, 2004, will be held Saturday at 10:15 from the DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, followed by services at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Mary Schreiber, senior missioner, officiating.

Burial will be in the family plot in Ashuelot Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, HospiceCare of the Berkshires or Dalton Ambulance, all in care of the funeral home. Jean was a kind, compassionate person who was always ready to give a helping hand, and was famous for her cream puffs.

She is lovingly survived by 11 grandchildren, Terri Herberg, Steven Pease, James Pease, Robyn Torres, Jeffrey Torres, Arthur Torres, Travis Torres, Kristen Blake, Anita Janney, Michael Torres and Ronald Torres; also by 17 great-grandchildren. Also survived by son-in-law, Richard Pease; daughters-in-law, Rita and Linda Torres, and a devoted friend, Susan Butler. She was predeceased by a grandson, Ross Torres.
