Stephen Kinnas

Stephen Kinnas, 88, of Robert Street died yesterday at home.

Born in Pittsfield on April 17, 1915, son of Metro and Domka Turchin Kinnas, he attended schools in Pittsfield.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Kinnas was employed by the Pittsfield School Department as a custodian for 13 years, retiring in 1981. He had worked at Allendale School, the former South Junior High School and Pontoosuc School. Previously, he worked at the former Wyandotte Worsted Mills and the former Berkshire Woolen Mill.

He was a communicant of Holy Family Church, and a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448.

He enjoyed playing softball with St. John's Ukrainian Catholic Church.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, ice fishing, fly-tying, gardening and woodworking.

He and his wife, the former Sophia Gorney, were married Sept. 4, 1948, at Holy Family Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Richard S. Kinnas of Stephentown, N.Y.; a daughter, Kathy Goebel of Cheshire; a brother, Matthew Kinnas of Sun City, Ariz.; a sister, Mary Kannes of Valatie, N.Y., and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons, Stephen M. Kinnas in 1956 and Peter S. Kinnas in 2001.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Stehen Kinnas, 88, who died Jan. 31, 2004, will be Wednesday at 8:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 9 at Holy Family Church by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.

Mr. Kinnas is lovingly survived by his eight adored and cherished grandchildren, Carly McDevitt, Mindy Chapman, Peter S. Kinnas Jr., John S. Goebel, Rebecca P. Goebel, Danielle D. Goebel, Kaitlyn M. Goebel and Zachary R. Goebel. He was predeceased by four brothers, John, Andrew, Thomas and Michael Kinnas.
