George W. Taylor

George W. Taylor, 80, of 16 Howe Road died Sunday at home after a battle with cancer.

Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 31, 1923, son of Charles S. and Ethel Tower Taylor, he was a 1943 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He attended Bryant and Stratton College while in the Navy and was a graduate of the former Berkshire Business College.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

A prominent local businessman, he owned several businesses. He began with Peter Francese and Son Construction in 1947 and became its president in 1972, selling it in 2000.

He was also president of Southern Berkshire Welding, Berkshire Electric Motor, and Restorations Inc., and was a general partner in Taylor Building Associates.

Mr. Taylor was an active member of the Lenox United Methodist Church and a life member of American Legion Post 68.

He and his wife, the former Marion Haverly, were married Dec. 1, 1946.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Beth E. Capitanio and Jill A. Wehry, both of Pittsfield; three sons, Mark G. Taylor of Marlboro, Conn., Scott C. Taylor Sr. of Pittsfield and Eric J. Taylor of Peru; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for George W. Taylor will be conducted on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 11 at the United Methodist Church of Lenox with the Rev. Dr. Roger Davis, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Pittsfield, officiating.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 at the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME. Following cremation, burial will be in the spring in the Mahaiwe Cemetery in Great Barrington. Among survivors are his daughters-in-law, Gina Vinciguerra and Beverly Taylor; two sons-in-law, Paul J. Capitanio Sr. and Louis M. Wehry; a future daughter-in-law, Jennifer Payson; and his grandchildren, Scott, Jason, Shari, Scott Jr., Heather, Holly, Jenna and Samantha. He was predeceased by a grandson, Paul J. Capitanio Jr.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Church of Lenox in care of the funeral home, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
