Bernard Francis Caffrey, 70, of 70 Oak St. Extension died Friday at home.
Born in Pittsfield on June 24, 1933, son of Walter J. Caffrey Sr. and Florence E. Kelly Caffrey, he was a 1951 graduate of St. Joseph's High School. He also held a degree in civil engineering.
He moved to Dalton in 1957.
He served in the Army during the Korean War.
A civil engineer, Mr. Caffrey was employed by the Massachusetts Highway Department District 1 office in Lenox for more than 30 years, retiring in 1991.
He was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church and a member of Benjamin F. Sullivan Post 155 American Legion, the General Electric Athletic Association Golf Club and the National Rifle Association.
He was a former member of Berkshire Hills Country Club, a volunteer for Elder Services of Berkshire County and the Dalton Council on Aging, and a New York Giants and dog racing fan.
His first wife, the former Virginia L. Westcott, whom he married Aug. 31, 1957, died in March 1970.
His wife, the former Ellen Gardner, whom he married Feb. 6, 1971, died March 23, 2001.
He leaves a son, Mark D. Caffrey Sr. of Ridgewood, N.J.; three daughters, Lynn C. Stall of Niverville, N.Y., Kathleen M. Love of the town of Washington and Cheryl E. Hardy of Pittsfield; a sister, Marie V. Caffrey of Pittsfield, and 12 grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Bernard Francis "Bernie" Caffrey, who died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, will be Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 9:15 from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Agnes' Church by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor.
Burial will be in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dalton Council on Aging in care of the funeral home, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
He leaves 12 grandchildren, Sasha M. Love, Eric M. Love, Cayla E. Love, Marissa A. Stall, Caitlyn M. Stall, Joshua P. Stall, Justin M. Stall, Mark D. "Mickey" Caffrey Jr., Erin C. Caffrey, Quinn C. Caffrey, Anna C. Caffrey and Patrick C. Caffrey.
He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's school and sports events. He was predeceased by a brother, Walter Caffrey Jr. of Pittsfield.
