Richard J. "Jim" Malumphy

Richard J. "Jim" Malumphy, 73, of 51 Church Lane died Friday evening at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Farmington, Conn., on July 12, 1930, son of Richard J. and Katherine Dorsey Malumphy, he was a 1949 graduate of Pittsfield High School and received his teaching certificate from Westfield State College in 1972.
He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and in the Navy Reserve with the Seabees MCB 12 of New England, retiring as a chief petty officer.
Mr. Malumphy taught auto mechanics at McCann Technical Vocational School in North Adams from 1973 to 1992, when he retired. He also taught the same course at Monument Mountain Regional High School in Great Barrington for one year.
Before teaching, he was co-owner of The Pitt Stop, a foreign car repair shop in Pittsfield, from 1969 to 1972. From 1960 to 1968, he was an automotive mechanic with Flynn Volkswagen in Pittsfield.
He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in West Stockbridge and a longtime member of the West Stockbridge Sportsmen's Club, the Richmond Historical Society and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448 in Pittsfield, where he served on the military honor guard.
An outdoorsman and hot rod enthusiast, he also enjoyed reading and traveling.
He and his wife, the former Corinne M. Murphy Coppola, were married Aug. 4, 1962.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Bernard J. Malumphy of Pittsfield; two stepsons, Gerald M. Coppola of Richmond and Craig B. Coppola of Millbury; three daughters, Carol A. Broderick of Bethlehem, Ga., Lisa M. Buchinski of Pittsfield and Dorsey A. Hydon of Lanesboro; a sister, Tess Malumphy of Greeley, Colo.; 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Richard J. "Jim" Malumphy, 73, who died Friday, Jan. 23, will be Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 9 from DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Patrick's Church, West Stockbridge, celebrated by the Rev. Steven McGuigan, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
Mr. Malumphy leaves his 12 grandchildren, Erin Calle, Christopher Broderick, Charles Coppola, Brian Coppola, Thomas Coppola, Kristin Coppola, Benjamin Buchinski, Jessica Buchinski, Dustin Buchinski, Nicole Blasioli, Allyson Blasioli and Jack Hydon, and two great-grandchildren, Jacob Calle and Raphael Calle.
