James Henry Ryan, 88, of 63 Anita Drive died Saturday at Laurel Lake Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Lee, where he had been a patient for a week.
Born in Willimantic, Conn., on Oct. 12, 1915, son of Thomas G. and Edna Worden Ryan, he attended schools in Pittsfield and was a 1934 graduate of Pittsfield High School, where he was a member of the swimming and track teams.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Ryan was employed by GE for 41 years, retiring in January 1977 as a production clerk. Before that, he worked at the former S.S. Kresge's department store on North Street.
He was a communicant of St. Teresa's Church and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs and Dalton American Legion Post 155.
He enjoyed bowling and doing crossword puzzles.
He his wife, the former Alba J. Forni, were married Sept. 20, 1941, at Mount Carmel Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Thomas J. Ryan of Burrville, R.I., and John M. Ryan of Hinsdale, and four grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for James H. Ryan, 88, who died Jan. 17, 2004, will be tomorrow, Jan. 20, at 9:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Teresa's Church celebrated by the Rev. John J. Varley, pastor.
Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be today from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to St. Teresa's Church, both in care of the funeral home.
Mr. Ryan is lovingly survived by his four adored grandchildren, Matthew, Monica, Seth and Thomas Ryan.
