Mary E. Matthews

Mary E. Matthews, 95, formerly of 39 Windsor Ave., died Monday at the Thirty-Thirty Park nursing home in Fairfield, Conn.

Born in Chester on May 1, 1908, daughter of John H. and Bridgett A. Mannion Harte, she attended schools in Pittsfield and graduated from St. Joseph's High School.

She also graduated from the former Elms Normal School, now Elms College, in Chicopee.

Mrs. Matthews taught fourth, fifth and sixth grades at the former Pomeroy and Mercer schools, retiring in 1971. She first taught in Canaan, N.Y., schools, until leaving to raise her family.

She was a longtime communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of its Family Society.

She also was a member of the Elms College Alumnae Association, the Massachusetts Retired Teachers' Association, the Berkshire County chapter of Retired Teachers and the Women's Club.

Her husband, George P. Matthews, whom she married July 25, 1936, died Feb. 26, 1998.

She leaves a son, Robert F. Matthews of Trumbull, Conn., five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Thistle.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mary E. Harte Matthews, 95, who died Jan. 19, 2004, will be Friday at 10:15 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday from 3 to 6. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in her memory may be made to the Elms College in care of the funeral home.

Mrs. Matthews is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Robert Thistle of Pittsfield, Melanie Thistle of Boston, Kristin Matthews of New York City, Thomas Matthews of Trumbull, Conn., and Jennifer Matthews of Bridgeport, Conn.; her daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Matthews of Trumbull, and her son-in-law, Lewis Thistle of Pittsfield.
