Sister Mary Genevieve

Sister Mary Genevieve, 96, formerly Anna Esther Cox, of the Sisters of Providence died yesterday at the Providence Mother House in Holyoke.

Born in Pittsfield on March 30, 1907, daughter of James and Bridget Loughran Cox, she was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. She also graduated from the St. Vincent Hospital School of Medical Technology in Worcester and had trained at the Pratt Diagnostic Institute in New York City.

She entered the Sisters of Providence in 1929.

She was a registered medical technologist, ministering at St. Vincent Hospital for 25 years. She also was a laboratory supervisor, electrocardiogram technician and volunteer at the former Farren Memorial Hospital in Montague City for 32 years.

She retired to the Mother House in 1988, where she continued her volunteer work for many years.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The wake for Sister Mary Genevieve, who died Jan. 12, 2004, will be conducted today, Jan. 13, from 3 to 7:30 at Providence Place, 5 Gamelin St., Holyoke.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated tomorrow, Jan. 14, at 10 in the Providence Place Chapel.

DILLON FUNERAL HOME Inc., 124 Chestnut St., Holyoke, has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Providence, 5 Gamelin St., Holyoke, MA 01040.

She leaves numerous cousins, friends and the sisters in her community.
