Francis W. Scutt

Francis W. Scutt, 79, of 111 Melbourne Road died yesterday at Hillcrest Commons, where he had resided since August 2002.

Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 5, 1924, son of Francis W. and Edna L. Moore Scutt, he was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. He also graduated from the Northeastern University's radio school.

He served with the Army Signal Corps during World War II.

Mr. Scutt was a firefighter with the Pittsfield Fire Department, retiring as a lieutenant in 1983 after 26 years of service. Before that, he worked for 15 years for the Boston & Albany Railroad as a tower operator.

He was a member of Immanuel Community Church and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and carpentry projects.

He and his wife, the former Virginia Hoag, would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on April 4.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, William F. Scutt of Bradenton, Fla.; a daughter, Heather Bartini of Pittsfield; two brothers, Gerald Scutt of Winsted, Conn., and James H. Scutt of Pittsfield, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Another son, Dean Scutt, died in 1972.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Francis W. Scutt, who died Jan. 13, 2004, will be conducted Friday at 10 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Angela Buchauer.

Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery in Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday from 4 to 7.

Among survivors are his grandchildren, William E. Scutt, Jessica L. Scutt, Joshua D. Scutt, Hannah M. Bartini and Dean J. Bartini, and his great-grandchildren, Christian Scutt and Ethan Householder.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Immanuel Community Church Memorial Fund or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
