William E. Rayner, 91, of 28 Delaware Ave., died Tuesday morning at Berkshire Medical Center shortly after being admitted.
Born in Ansonia, Conn., on Aug. 8, 1912, he was the son of William H. and Bessie R. Fisher Rayner.
A resident of Pittsfield since 1915, he was a 1932 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 250th Combat Engineers in the European theater, where they built the Friendship Bridge in 10 days. Mr. Rayner was a technical sergeant.
He and his father owned and operated Rayner's Store on Stoddard Avenue for many years, closing in 1964. He later was employed by the former Nesbit's store for three years. He retired in 1984 from Shedd's Plumbing, where he was employed as a salesman.
He was a semipro baseball player with the Elm Cubs and Mohawk Beverage.
His wife, the former Elsie Goodskey, whom he married Aug. 24, 1940, died May 20, 1997.
He leaves a son, Jeffrey Rayner of Pittsfield, two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 2, at 11 a.m. at DWYER FUNERAL HOME with the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor of St. Charles' Church, officiating.
Burial will be at a later date in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the funeral home Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. If friends desire, donations may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home in his memory.
