Robert C. Buckwalter

Robert C. Buckwalter, 87, of 259 High St. died Saturday at home.

Born in Pittsfield on July 8, 1916, son of Jesse Otto and Louise Gauthier Buckwalter, he was a 1933 graduate of Pittsfield High School and attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mr. Buckwalter was employed by GE in the supervisory training programs. During World War II, he coordinated the tool department to change the power transformer tank shop over to manufacture 3,000-horsepower engines for the Liberty Ships and destroyer escorts.

After the war he converted the shop back to transformer tank manufacturing and was appointed general foreman, with approximately 200 people reporting to him.

A few years later, he was transferred to the voltage regulator product section as general foreman and later became manager of manufacturing engineering.

He receive managerial awards for improvements in manufacturing processes and the design of specialized machinery. He also taught materials and processes to the engineering postgraduate student program here at GE. He retired in 1977 after 44 years of service.

Mr. Buckwalter was a member of the former Stanley Club, the Elfun Society, and the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs.

He was an officer in the Foremen's Club of Pittsfield and involved for many years with the Berkshire United Way.

After retiring, he moved to Englewood, Fla. He enjoyed water sports, hiking, tennis, skiing, golf and woodworking.

His wife, the former Virginia Dell Supple, whom he married April 9, 1941, died April 27, 1997.

He leaves three daughters, Robin Cindi Bardwell, with whom he had resided since 1998, B. Jennine Lindstrom of Des Plaines, Ill., and Marilyn June Barry of Pittsfield; a brother, George Buckwalter of Onancock, Va.; five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Graveside services will be held tomorrow, Dec. 30, 2003, in Pittsfield Cemetery for Robert C. Buckwalter, who died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, in care of DWYER FUNERAL HOME, which is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Buckwalter was the beloved grandfather of Andrew Frederick Lindstrom, Benjamin Canfield Ryan, Shannon Barry Stautberg, Heather Alexis Barry and Robert Daniels Bardwell IV. He also leaves his loving niece Louise Edmonson. Survivors include his sons-in-law, Frederick Lindstrom and Robert Bardwell III; his grandson-in-law, Matthew Stautberg; his granddaughters-in-law, Shannon Lindstrom and Sarah McSweeney Ryan; and his great-granddaughter, Anna Katherine Lindstrom.

He was predeceased by a sister, Grace Edmonson, and by two brothers, David and Donald Buckwalter.
