Richard David Vallin

Richard David Vallin, 76, of 404 Bay Hill Court, New Bern, N.C., formerly of Pittsfield, died Sunday at home.

Born in Pittsfield on April 3, 1927, son of Daniel and Dora Halperin Vallin, he was a 1945 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He also completed studies at Suffield (Conn.) Academy and attended Champlain College in Plattsburgh, N.Y., until recalled to active duty in 1948.

An Army veteran, he served with the occupation forces in post-World War II Germany for a year, and later served in Korea.

Mr. Vallin was in both merchandising and manufacturing. He was manager and later owner of the family business, the former Jay's specialty store on North Street; a buyer of women's ready-to-wear at Whitney's of Albany, N.Y., and Martin's of New York City, and general merchandise manager of the Racusin stores in eastern Pennsylvania.

He also opened outlet stores in the Northeast and Midwest.

Besides his wife, the former Marlene Boyd, he leaves a son, David Boyd Vallin of Lake Worth, Fla.; a daughter, Allison Vallin Kostovick of Portland, Maine; a sister, Judith Vallin Gluck of Niskayuna, N.Y., and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Richard David Vallin, age 76, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003. The funeral will be Friday, Dec. 26, at 2 at Pittsfield Cemetery, with Rabbi Harold Salzmann officiating. Friends are asked to meet inside the cemetery gate at 1:45.

He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Blythe Elizabeth Vallin and Jackson Vallin Kostovick; his daughter-in-law, Kimberly Vallin, and his son-in-law, Tom Kostovick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association in care of the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
