The Rev. Eugene C. Archey

The Rev. Eugene C. Archey, 89, a retired Roman Catholic priest, formerly of 54 Dickinson Ave., died Saturday at Providence Care Center of Lenox, where he had resided since June 23, 2000.
Born in Pittsfield on April 21, 1914, son of Peter D. and Celina Touchette Archey, he graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1932. He attended Providence (R.I.) College from 1932 until entering the Seminary of Philosophy in Montreal in 1934. After two years there, he attended the Grand Seminary in Montreal until 1940. He received his bachelor's degree in theology from the University of Montreal in 1940.
Father Archey was ordained a priest on May 18, 1940, at St. Michael's Cathedral in Springfield by the late Bishop Thomas M. O'Leary.
He celebrated his first Solemn Mass the next day at Notre Dame Church.
He was pastor of St. Christopher's Church in Worcester for 16 years until retiring on Jan. 6, 1984. Since then, he had assisted parishes in Berkshire County, especially St. Mary's Church in Pittsfield. He also conducted Scripture classes at St. Mary's, St. Joseph's and St. Francis' churches.
He first served as assistant pastor at St. Ann's Church in Lenox and, in 1942, was appointed assistant pastor at Our Lady Immaculate Church in Athol. In 1948, he became assistant pastor of St. Joseph's Church in North Brookfield.
In 1955, he served as curate at St. Stephen's Church, and in 1951, he became the chaplain at St. Vincent's Hospital, both in Worcester, as well as its instructor of nurses in psychology and religion. His first pastorate was at St. Matthew's Church in Southboro, where he ministered for 11 years.
He leaves a brother, Edward E. Archey of Pittsfield.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for the Rev. Eugene C. Archey, who died Dec. 20, 2003, will be Tuesday at 10, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church concelebrated by the Most Rev. Daniel P. Reilly, bishop of Worcester, and other priests. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours at St. Mary's Church on Tyler Street will be Monday from 4 to 7, with a Vigil service at 7 led by Auxiliary Bishop George E. Rueger of Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Providence Care Center of Lenox in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., which is handling arrangements.
Survivors also include many nieces and nephews.
